An initialization procedure for limited-area models for numerical weather prediction
This paper describes a diagnostic objective analysis procedure designed to derive dynamically consistent three-dimensional fields of horizontal wind velocity, geopotential and temperature over limited-area subsynoptic and mesoscale domains. These analyses provide data for initial and boundary conditions for the fine-mesh model tests over the United States and Europe made at Fleet Numerical Weather Central (FNWC) and described by Anthes (1978). Objective analyses are produced on nine standard pressure levels over 70 x 70 unstaggered 60-km Cartesian grids on Lambert conformal map projections covering the United States and western Europe including the western Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract. Because of the size of the ocean we do not have, nor are we ever likely to have, good synoptic data on the ocean circulation. However, data from relatively isolated instruments within the ocean are usually available and these are now being joined by data from satellite mounted instruments which give routine surveillance of the ocean greggdev.com by: 5. The Global Forecast System is a global numerical weather prediction system containing a global computer model and variational analysis run by the United States' National Weather Service. — Operation — The mathematical model is run four times a day, and produces forecasts for up to This paper presents a neural network approach for weather forecast improvement. Predicted parameters, such as air temperature or precipitation, play a crucial role not only in the transportation sector but they also influence people’s everyday activities. Numerical weather models require real measured data for the correct forecast greggdev.com: Jaroslav Frnda, Marek Durica, Jan Nedoma, Stanislav Zabka, Radek Martinek, Michal Kostelansky.

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) uses mathematical models of the atmosphere and oceans to predict the weather based on current weather conditions.
Though first attempted in the s, it was not until the advent of computer simulation in the s that numerical weather predictions produced realistic results. A number of global and regional forecast models are run in different countries. Limited area models with pronounced topographic features need to be carefully initialized.
We have attempted to adapt the nonlinear normal mode initialization technique developed for large-scale Author: Serge Briere. Numerical Weather Prediction Models 71 Although nonlinear initialization has been clearly beneficial and the concept of a slow manifold has great heuristic value, there remain many fundamental questions to answer about the details of the nonlinear dynamics of the Cited by: 2.
